Annual Election Guidelines

Some basic election do's and don'ts for Candidates to remember.

DO

• Ensure your nomination form(s) is/are properly filled out and handed in on time with your manifesto(s), photographs and you obtain a signed and dated receipt.

• Remember to include all the University's sites in your campaign.
Make sure you use the whole of the Campaign period to your advantage not just the three voting days.

• Ensure you understand the regulations governing elections listed in our Constitution and are covered in this guide. Always ask for clarification if something is unclear.

• Follow instructions given staff at the Polling Stations. They are there on behalf of the Returning Officer to ensure fair conduct.

• Remember to use your vote too. How to vote is explained on our website and on pamphlets available from the Union Offices.

DON'T

• Intimidate students, staff or other candidates. You will probably have to work with these people when you take office.

• Argue with staff at the polling station. They are there to help you. Any issues you have with staff at the polling stations should be raised with the Returning Officer.

• Tear down or obscure other candidate's publicity materials.

• Display any publicity materials in places other than those designated by the Returning Officer.

• Use any materials, posters or publicity other than those permitted by Returning Officer.

• Harass or talk to - either in person or by proxy - students who are voting as voting is conducted by secret ballot. (Standing Order 2.5.3).

Only people voting are permitted to be in the voting areas.
