The Race unit of UELSU has been established with the aim of drawing attention to the ideology of race, what it means, and how it affects our lives both as individuals and students of UEL. Race has been defined as,'An ideology which ascribes negatively evaluated characteristics in a deterministic manner to a social group which is additionally identified as being in some way distinct'(R. Miles, in Racism & Migrant Labour, p75). Going by this definition, there is therefore a need to put an end to stereotypes and discriminations of all sorts in our community, and to assert that no race is superior to the other. What we find in a typical UEL lecture room is a fine blend of students from various creeds, colors, race and religion, and there is no disputing the fact that this is an added advantage to our community. Take the 'Many World's Week' promo for instance; this has been designed by the university refectory to give students and staff of UEL a taste of exortic dishes from the very many nationalities at UEL. A gesture such as this goes a long way to explain the importance we attach to race, multiculturalism, 'equality and diversity'.
Working closely with the university'sand the 'Commission for Racial Equality', the Race Unit of UELSU is poised to tackle equal opportunities from every angle. The Race officer of UELSU currently sits on the university's, in a bid to ensure that student perspectives on Equality and Diversity is represented. The Race Unit operates in accordance with Acts of Parliament, such as the Race Relations Act(1976), Race Relations (Amendment) Act (2000), Immigration Act (1971), Immigration & Asylum Act (1999), Local Government Act (1988), etc. We aim to educate the UEL community (students and staff) on relevant legislation that could apply to their circumstances, or make community life worth while. The Race Unit also works with and encourages Community-Based groups/organisations which promote equality. We deal with issues relating discrimination, harrassment, and racially motivated acts within the community.
The Race Unit of UELSU has close links with cultural societies, entertainment and events organisers through whom we promote diversity. Working with the UELSU Clubs and Societies, The Race Unit encourages all students of UEL to join at least one of UELSU's as a way of fostering good relationships with fellow students and the community at large. The Race Unit would be organising and promoting certain events on campus, aimed at presenting a better view of the world around you. We have maintained our presence in events such as The Respect Festival,Nottinghill Carnival, etc, and would ask you to attend such events. My Advice to students is, "Make good use of every opportunity UEL can afford, this includes an opportunity to be in a diverse community".
