Well, if you ever find yourself in one of the student union offices you will find a variety of people behind the scenes and the counters eager to help you out with many and varied things. In fact, you will also find all of our ugly mugs on display in the office as well
Here's where we tell you who we are, what we do, and how you can contact us!
There are three different types of people who work in the union, so let us explain;
Executives
these are 14 students, elected annually by students, to represent students at the university. There are 6 full-time Sabbatical (paid) officers and 8 part-time, voluntary officers.
Staff
Permanent staff of the student union are there mainly to assist in implementing the vision of the executive, and ensuring the day to day running of the Union.
Student Staff
Students employed on a part-time basis to work in our receptions, shop, Bars and Common Rooms. As these change more regularly you will not see any of their names or roles on this website.
Please go to the individual pages for more details and you feel the weird compulsion to see our photos. -->
UELSU's role as outlined in our Mission Statement is to improve the quality of the student experience at the University of East London. This is achieved through the provision of services that both support students during their time here and promote the idea of a student community at UEL. We also undertake representation and campaign work on issues of interest and/or importance to our members.
Like any Union UELSU is fundamentally a political organisation, in that all our work is focused on promoting the interests of our members. UELSU is a democratic organisation, run by students for students. Day to day decisions on the running of the Union are made by an Executive Committee, who are democratically elected each year by the membership, and are thus accountable to that membership. Union staff are accountable to the Executive through a line management structure.
UELSU runs and Advice and Information Service (AIS), which provides confidential welfare advice, as well as representation and support through disputes with the University and outside bodies. The AIS also runs awareness campaigns in order to get important information out to students who may not be accessing the service directly.
The Union facilitates the creation and maintenance of sports clubs and cultural societies (Activities) run by our students. This allows students with similar interests to meet and socialise, learn skills, and while doing so, promote the diversity of social and cultural life in our university, which enriches the student experience.
Each year UELSU undertakes campaign work around a set of issues deemed to be a priority in terms of the needs of our members. In addition we have liberation units who carry out ongoing work on equality for oppressed groups (women, racial minorities, LGBT (lesbian, gay,bisexual and Transgendered), disabled, student parents, mature and international students). We also have an environmental unit which concentrates on green issues.
UELSU runs a range of commercial services to cater to the needs of the student body, provide communal spaces to relax in and a place for all students to feel comfortable. Currently we operate a bar & shop at each of our three sites. We also run an Internet Café© at our Stratford site. Our offices at each site provide faxing, photocopying, laminating and general information. All our outlets also provide local and flexible employment opportunities for students and only sell products from ethical companies.
